Copenhagen Type 1

Copenhagen entered the story in 1773 with the famous “Schimmelmann” coins. Johan Ephraim Bauert’s first dies were backdated to 1771 but looked sufficiently different from Wolff’s Altona coins to raise public doubts about their authenticity. With their small, widely spaced letters and distinctive monogram, Type 1 marks both the beginning of Copenhagen production and the starting point for Bauert’s long evolution of the design.
